James L. Clemons was the only member of the Clemons family that did not permanently settle in the Town of Coggon, Iowa. He was also the only member of the family who was a farmer.

James was born in Wisconsin during the family's slow westward migration. He married Sadie Blanch, a native of Linn County, Iowa, sometime around 1897 (Sadie was probably the daughter of Gorvanus and Lydia Blanch of Boulder). By 1900, they were living in Coggon and James was working as a teamster, but by 1910 they had moved onto a farm outside the Town, but still within Jackson Township. They had two sons: Leroy was born in 1901 and Paul was born in 1903. By 1930, both sons had left the farm and both James and Sadie were still living,

Paul married a woman named Margaret Kearns in Linn County in November 1929 (the license was dated 2 November 1929).  By 1930 Paul and Margaret were living in Minneapolis and Paul was a manager at a livestock feed outfit (maybe a stockyard, maybe a feed store).

Leroy probably also married a woman named Margaret. The marriage index of Linn County shows a "Roy B. Clemons" marrying Margaret L. Hunter on 23 June 1928. But there is also a record of a "Lee R. Clemons" marrying Edith M. Stovel on 2 September 1922. I have been unable to determine for sure which one is the right guy.

James died in 1943 at about age 76. Sadie lived on until 1972, when she died at about age 99. Both are buried in the Coggon Cemetery.
