Day 19: Fort Scott to Osawatomie. 66 miles. I made a brilliant
decision to have Linda pick me up in Osawatomie rather than ride
all the way to Ottawa. Yes, Linda is back. The decision was
brilliant because it saved my sore bottom 20 miles on a gravel
trail, and it
saved me from being caught out in a thunderstorm. Oddly, I did
not see any horse-draw race cars as promised by the sign.
But I did see the actual 1930s fire engine used on those signs
you see near firehouses.
Beautiful riding weather today. Light tailwind. Clear skies.
I rescued a turtle from the middle of the road. First of the
trip.
I noticed that cows are curious enough to crane their necks to
watch me go by, but not curious enough to move their feet.
All the dogs I saw today were either tied up, fenced in, or dead
on the road.
Linda caught up with me about 15 miles south of Osawatomie and I
unloaded my bags for the run into town.
Sometimes the grass literally is greener on the other side of
the fence, and it might just be worth jamming your head through
there for a bite.
Finally delayed by a train--just 3 blocks from the end of the
day in Osawatomie. What a relief I've put that behind me.
I met Linda at John Brown State Historic Site. Where Brown
fought the Battle of Osawatomie. This statue was cast by the
same
outfit in Paris that did the Statue of Liberty. Their interns
must have needed something to do..
Brown's original cabin is also here inside a store building.
Maybe they should have made the building a little bigger. That's
the curator sitting
in his corner "office."
Tomorrow I ride into Kansas City to finish the cycling portion
of the trip. Then we will drive down to Memphis for a couple
days of tourism.
