Day 9
Saturday, 11 July 2020
Millersville, MD to Towson, MD
48.9 miles, 4h27m, 10.8 mph
Elapsed Time: 5h55m, Max speed: 37.0mph
Total Climbing: 2461ft, Max elevation: 524ft
Total mileage: 501.4
I took too many pictures today.
Especially of viaducts. I took two.
This is the Thomas Viaduct. Completed
in 1835 and still carrying trains. I went under it.
Patapsco State Park was full of people
splashing about. This
is my first time through the park since they removed the
Bloede Dam.
So no dam
photos.
It rained yesterday but apparently
Ellicott City
was not destroyed for a change.
I climbed up to the Howard County Courthouse and was
met by a throng of fans.
The front of the courthouse is very
hard to photograph.
The back looks like it could really use a
door. And some 'U's.
After distantly
socializing
for a while, I foolishly did some additional climbing
to see the District Courthouse.
I dropped back down the hill through Ellicott City
and into Baltimore County with a nice climb into Catonsville.
As you can see,
I'm back on the National Road and--as the mile marker clearly says--seven miles from
Baltimore.
It was a nice coast down into the city. Then I left the
National Road
for the Gwynn's Falls Trail.
This is the
Carrollton Viaduct. Built in 1829 and
still carrying trains. That's all the
viaduct photos.
Down into the Inner Harbor. I took this picture to prove
I was there.
The city government area was protester-free. Though the area around police
headquarters was blocked off.
This is the
strictly utilitarian District Courthouse.
Nobody around city hall. Though there are some barricades and big
trucks parked around the front of the building.
I'm assuming the Circuit Court is in this imposing building.
The original Washington Monument. Designed by the same guy who
designed that other one.
Much later, I was in Towson having a food truck hot dog in front
of the old courthouse.
The current Circuit Courthouse is all business.
And the District Courthouse a couple blocks away has unusually
large windows.
Tomorrow I hit Bel Air and Elkton. And hit a brewery along the
way.
