Day 8. Telford to Liverpool. 85 miles. Longest day yet.
The one and only goal for today was to make it to the Mersey ferry
before the last run at 6:30. As a result, we didn't stop very
often to take
pictures or to eat or to complain about things.
This milestone gave us lots of useful information. Can't remember
where this was. No doubt John's photo is geo-tagged.
After much riding we reached Chester and it's unusually poor
quality canal towpath. By this time we felt good about making the
ferry
so we stopped long enough to watch this boat lock through. It was
a beautiful day and there were lots of boats floating about
in the canals.
Yup. Lots of them.
On the other side of Chester we picked up a fantastic bike path
that took us briefly into Wales, or Gymru, I suppose. We were
there for about
a half hour.
These sheep were penned in on an army firing range. I think we
were back in England at this point. In Cheshire.
Notice Balint's hedge-blend jersey renders him nearly invisible
and the sheep are not alarmed.
After much wandering about, we made it to the ferry dock a couple
minutes too late to catch the 5:30 boat. So we found a pub
and had a beer while we waited for the last boat--whose name is
Snowdrop, for some reason.
They don't just take you straight across--they wander a bit
upstream so you can listen to some recorded history.
We reached the other side and headed for the Holiday Inn Express
(not pictured).
