Katie was the first child of Abraham and Patty Clemons--at least she was the first one that we know about.  She was born in Vermont in about 1811, probably on the Clemons farm in West Haven. Katie was mentally retarded and lived with her parents until they died in the 1860s.  When her brother Archibald took over the homestead, she stayed on and lived there until her death on January 20, 1872.

Census reports of her age vary widely and her tombstone is hard to read. Moore's Cemetery Records reports a death date of January 20, 1872 and age of 68. Jackson's Death Notices lists a Sandy Hill Herald death notice dated January 29, 1873 and an age of 64. My own reading of the tombstone is 1873. But for some reason I no longer remember, I've settled on 20 Jan 1872.

She may have been born in Benson, VT, where her father lived at the time of his marriage, but there is no record. On the other hand, she may have been born in Brandon, VT, her mother's home (although the Brandon town records do not show it). Her birth is not reported in the West Haven town records either, but the family also lived there before moving to New York.

We believe her to have been mentally retarded because the 1860 census listed her as "idiotic" and the 1870 census reported that she was over 21 and unable to read or write.
