Contract for Abraham Clemons to Operate a Ferry (transcript below)

In the Matter of Abraham Clemons

Abraham O. Clemons personally appears in court and acknowledges himself to owe
and be indebted to the people of the State of New York in the sum of
one hundred dollars to be levied and made of his goods and chattels
lands and tenaments to the use of the said people if default be made in the
condition following -

The condition of this recognizance is such that if the said Abraham Clemons
shall keep and attend a ferry across Lake Champlain from a point or place
on the lands of the said Abraham Clemons in the Town of Dresden and running
across the said lake to a place called the Cold Springs in the Town of
West Haven, State of Vermont, and shall at all times during the several hours
of the day keep and have ready to ply at the said ferry one sufficient and safe
scow boat, or so many sufficient and safe scow boats, and so many men to work
the same as shall be necessary for the use of the public in crossing at said
ferry for the term of three years and at and for a rate of tolls not to exceed
the following sums, viz:

for a single horse and rider 12 1/2 cents;
for two horses and wagon 25 cents;
for one horse and wagon 18 3/4 cents;
for a span of horses and driver without a wagon or carriage 18 3/4 cents;
for one yoke of oxen and wagon or cart 25 cents;
for one yoke of oxen without wagon or cart 18 3/4 cents;
for every additional horse or ox led or driven six cents;
for droves of cattle or horses such sum as the owner and ferry man agree upon
        not exceeding three cents each;
for sheep and hogs in like manner but not exceeding two cents each when the
        number of hogs or sheep shall be twelve or more;
for a single person six cents.
 

In the Matter of Abraham Clemons

The said Abraham Clemons having applied to this court to keep a ferry across
Lake Champlain for the term of three years from a point of place on the lands
of the said Abraham Clemons in the Town of Dresden and running across the said
Lake to a place called the Cold Springs in the Town of West Haven, State of Vermont
and having personally appeared in court and entered into a recognizance of one
hundred dollars to the people of this State as is required by law, It is ordered
that the said Abraham Clemons be and he is hereby licensed to keep and attend a
ferry across the said Lake at the place aforesaid at the rates of ferriage
specified in the said recognizance.
