Day 21: Driving from Kansas City to Memphis. There were several
interesting things to see along the way--like the world's
largest
coal shovel, and a much smaller shovel nearby (in Rich Hill,
MO).
We toured the Harry Truman birthplace in Lamar, MO.
And their swank two-holer outhouse.
Then off to Springfield, MO to see the world's largest fork.
Then Mansfield, MO to see a monument to Carl Mays, the only
pitcher to kill another player with a pitched ball.
That's not why he has a monument here. Actually I don't know why
he has a monument here. Maybe he's from here--like
Laura Ingalls Wilder (not pictured).
In September 1964, the Beatles' plane landed in Walnut Ridge, AR
so that the Fab Four could spend a weekend break in their
American tour at
some rich guy's ranch in Missouri. Walnut Ridge has been
celebrating the event ever since.
Walnut Ridge also has this guitar-shaped memorial to the artists
who cut their teeth on the backroads of Arkansas, like
Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis. As best I can tell, the guitar
is an Epiphone because the Beatles used a couple.
We finally got to Memphis at dinner time and we headed out to
Beale Street.
Dinner was a full rack of ribs at the Blues City Cafe. After
that all I could do is crawl back to the hotel. All the beer
comes in plastic cups because you can
drink in the street. Maybe tomorrow we'll be able to
stay up respectably late.
