Well, I didn't make it Houghton. It was just too cold, too wet, and too far. When I started the day, I had Plan A (114 miles to Houghton), Plan B (60 miles to Ontonagon), and Plan C (50 miles to Silver City). I ended up going with Plan C.

According to the Weather Channel, it was 34 degrees in Ironwood when I rolled out. I was wearing all my cold weather gear and my bike was trimmed out for bad weather. The forecast called for a high of 60 and afternoon showers in Houghton. It never got to 60 and it started raining in the morning.

I took very few pictures, as there was very little to see. Not even very many spine-jarring cracks to complain about. The biggest event was crossing into the Eastern Time Zone on some nondescript stretch of road in the middle of nowhere.

Woo-hoo! I just lost an hour.

Typical Day 4 scenery. Note the clouds.

It was about 11am when I reached Bergland and turned north toward the Lake. I was about ten miles from Silver City and 25 miles from Ontonagon when it started raining. The bank in Bergland said it was 50 degrees, my bike computer said it was 47, I said something unprintable. It was too cold to be wet. I'd been seeing signs advertising the AmericInn hotel in Silver City, so I activated Plan C and put my head down and hammered. It was a big help that it was downhill all the way. Not steep enough to coast, but steep enough to go fast. I rolled in just after noon. This place has no food until the restaurant opens at 5pm, but there's free coffee, so I should be able to make it.

The amazing thing is that there is no cell service here, but I have high-speed Internet. Where's my vaunted Verizon Network? Where?

So I'm going to have to skip Houghton, which is a shame because I really wanted to see the industrial decay of the copper mining industry. The good news is that I don't have to fall behind schedule. I plan to run straight over to Baraga tomorrow, which is where I would have ended up had I made it to Houghton today. Meanwhile, I will study for the bar exam and relax.
