Another day of grinding out miles. Kind of hard. Headwind. Not too
interesting. Nevertheless I took many photos.
I saw a giant windmill blade on a truck!
This is the place where the Mormons started their trek to Utah after
being driven out of Illinois.
This is a reconstruction of the first schoolhouse in Iowa.
In some places it's hard to find MRT signs. Not in Iowa. They were
everywhere.
And then the MRT abandoned me in a bad part of Keokuk.
I crossed in to Illinois and got on to this nice road.
Which turned in to this road.
And ultimately became this godforsaken road to forever.
Hard to believe we're in a river valley.
After many hours of pedaling into the wind, I reached Quincy, which has
a nice riverfront district. Which means there are fewer rock piles and
bulldozers than most other riverfront towns. So I had lunch, then back
to the endless road. Now with more traffic and big trucks. I caught up
with a couple guys who are riding from Fargo to the Gulf. Maybe I'll
see them again tomorrow. Almost got squished by a big truck making a
left turn on to the highway. Guess my new camouflage panniers and my
battleship grey bike are not visible enough in broad daylight.
Unsquished, I jumped on to I-72 and crossed the river for the 7th time
into Hannibal...
...where Linda was waiting with a camera...
...and a very large SUV.
Later, we drove back downtown for dinner. Everything down there is all
Mark Twain.
There's this statute of Mark Twain the riverboat pilot.
Here's a sampling of Mark Twain businesses in downtown Hannibal.
