Day 8
Saturday, 5 June 2010
La Crosse, WI to Prairie du Chien, WI
57.5 miles, 4h21m, 13.2 mph
Elapsed Time: 5h12m, Max speed: 26.7mph
Total Climbing: 793ft, Max elevation: 733ft
Total mileage: 579.8
This was the easiest day yet. Less than 60 miles and almost no hills.
The only wrinkle was the hour of light rain we had to ride through just
before the end.
We rode out in the morning to search for breakfast, and found it right
across the street from the motel. The food was fantastic.
A hungry pedaler at The Hungry Peddler
Shortly after getting started we ran up on a couple guys who are riding
from St. Paul to New Orleans. Then they took off and we never saw them
again. I expect they are doing marathon mileage.
Last we saw them they were gettng passed by a steamroller.
The scenery was pretty much the same as yesterday. The road runs along
the Upper Mississippi River Fish and Wildlife Refuge. I'm not sure
about the fish refuge part of it. There's usually no hunting in a
wildlife refuge, but there seem to be plenty of people fishing in the
fish refuge. I guess I don't know about these things.
SSDD. Same scenery, different day.
I really don't think the misspellings make it seem more old-timey.
You know you're in Wisconsin when Cheese and Food are not the same
thing.
Last picture before it started raining.
It started raining when we were about 20 miles outside of Prairie du
Chien. It never really rained hard, and we never put on the rain gear.
Still it was pretty wet. It stopped well before we got to the motel.
Then we grabbed lunch at a nearby pub and walked through the rest of
downtown.
Tomorrow we leave Wisconsin for good and cross the river to Iowa. It
will be our fifth crossing of the Mississippi.
