Day 10
Sunday, 5 June 2011
Centre, AL to Dallas, GA
81.9 miles, 7h06m, 11.5 mph
Elapsed Time: 9h10m, Max speed: 33.1mph
Total Climbing: 2079ft, Max elevation: 1180ft
Total mileage: 664.2
An unexpectedly long day. Twenty miles on the road and fifty on bike
paths. And then a few extra miles just trying to get off the damn trail.
My traditional morning barn photo.
Alabama is ranked 47th in bicycle friendliness by the
League of American Bicyclists. Not a surprise.
I encountered more tornado damage south of Ellisville.
I joined the Chief Ladiga Trail at Piedmont. I spent about 15 minutes
in the visitor center talking to the guy there.
And I met this cat outside.
The trail looked like this.
There were a few scenic spots, but not many.
At the Georgia line the trail changed into the Silver Comet.
And it changed to concrete.
I stopped in Cedartown for supplies.
There I talked to a couple guys who did a weekend trip and spent last
night sweating in a tent.
Between Cedartown and Rockmart the trail left the rails and wandered
around through the hills. I wasn't counting on any serious climbing
today. Bleh.
The trail climbed slowly until it went through this tunnel.
Eventually I reached the crossroad I was
looking for. Unfortunately it passed high overhead on a bridge. I had
to backtrack a mile or so to the nearest trail access. And then I had
to work my way back on the highway.
I can't help thinking they did this just to piss me off.
Finally I rolled in to the Days Inn in
Dallas. It's kind of a dive. I have a non-smoking room that smells like
somebody's been smoking in it. Since everybody around here smokes, I
assume some redneck just pulled a chair out of the room and smoked
outside the open door.
Tommrow should be exciting. I'm riding through downtown Atlanta.
