Salt Point State Park, CA to Santa Rosa, CA
51.4 miles, 3h59m, 12.9 mph
Elapsed Time: 5h33m, Max speed: 35.6mph
Total Climbing: 1885ft, Max elevation: 693ft
Total mileage: 1217.4
There was a steady mist falling as we started at 7am. It looked like it
was going to be another crappy day. There wasn't very much traffic this
early but there were lots of people at the coastal access points. I
think they were hunting abalone or something.
If yesterday was hard, today started off even harder. Up and down, in
and out of gulches. And finally a big climb up into the clouds. Oh, and
there was this cow. All the cattle grates I've ridden or driven over
and I'd never seen a cow on the road until now.
Moo.
The top of the climb was in the clouds.
There was a screaming descent out of the clouds and back down to sea
level...then another climb up...and a final drop down into Jenner.
The mouth of the Russian River.
We stopped at Jenner and I called Linda on a pay phone. She was in
Petaluma and headed our way. We ate a second (and third) breakfast at a
nice restaurant and started riding up the Russian River valley. After
about three miles we met Linda coming the other way. Woo-hoo!
The happy reunion.
Without bags, and with a tailwind, we flew up the valley to
Guerneville. Ten years ago, Linda and I stayed here one night during
our tandem bike tour honeymoon. Neither of us has any memory of the
place.
After a brief stop we moved on up the valley and started to see
grapes...and the sun.
These grapes will someday be Korbel.
We spotted Linda's car at the Martinelli Winery so we stopped and
didn't sample any wine. We may do some of that tomorrow.
