Day 3: McComb to Natchez. 79 miles. I was worried this would be a hard day. Narrow roads with no shoulders, high-speed traffic, dogs.
And I wanted to get to Natchez in time for the 4pm tour at the Melrose Plantation--as anyone would. So I was on the road before 7am.

The going was easy at the beginning. It was quiet. Most of the traffic was going the other way. There were cows.

Of course, there were stupid rumble strips.

It was soupy humid all day--which helped keep the temperature down. I stopped in a town called Gloster for lunch. At 10:15am.
I was making good time. And I only had to pepper spray two dogs!

First time I've seen one of these on this trip--the truck on a wedge--not a sign with bullet holes. Plenty of those around here.

Where there is humidity there is rain. In the last 20 miles I ran into three rain storms. I stopped for the first one.
I just rode through the second one.

For the third one I took sanctuary at the Antioch Baptist Church.  The rain storms slowed me down a little, but
I was still in good shape to get into Natchez on time.

Finally I rolled into Natchez. It is a pretty town. Notice how the flowers in the tree on the right match the utilities trucks, and
the flowers in the tree on the left match the cones--sort of.

We easily made it to Melrose on time for the 4pm tour--only to find that there was no 4pm tour. The last tour was at 3pm.
Goes to show--never believe the Internet. So we had an early dinner at Pig Out Inn Barbeque.

A note on gear. Pictured is the Brooks B17 saddle I rode the first two days. Due to discomfort, I switched to my old Terry saddle for today just
to see how it would feel. The two saddles have distinctly different pain profiles. But the Brooks pain seems more searing--as befitting a leather
saddle with exposed rivets. I'll try the Terry for another day just to be fair--maybe the pain will be transcendent.
