Day 22

Rest day in Salt Lake City, UT

The first thing we did on our first rest day was to box up some of my gear and mail it home. The second thing
we did was think all about socks as we wandered Brigham City's famous footwear district.

Then we drove up to Promontory to see the Golden Spike place. While we were there they rolled the replica locomotives into place.
Which I guess they do every day. This is the replica Jupiter, the Central Pacific locomotive.

And this is the replica 119, the Union Pacific locomotive.

The classic golden spike configuration.

Then we wandered in the desert for a while on one of the scenic drives. I really need a shave.

On the East Grade Auto Tour you get to drive down the Central Pacific roadbed east of the spike. Since every mile of track was worth
big money to the railroads, the two railroads built side-by-side roadbeds for 250 miles. This part of the Central Pacific bed
never had rails since this ended up in the Union Pacific zone.

This is the Chinese Arch--apparently named to honor the contributions of Chinese laborers in building the railroads.

Next we visited the massive Thiokol facility across the street. I question whether safety was always first with these guys.

They have a rocket garden in their yard featuring many of their products.

Now you'd think you wouldn't have to tell people....oh.

The space shuttle solid rocket booster is the star of the show.

We drove into Ogden for lunch at a pizza joint. This is a Buffalo chicken sandwich where the sandwich was baked into a pizza crust.

Then we stopped by the Hill Aerospace Museum. The building is way too small to hold all the planes, and the lighting is poor. But they
have a B-1 bomber in the yard.

Utah has some kind of highway safety campaign going on. I'm not sure 2 out of 7 days is good.

Finally we ended the day at Smith's Ballpark watching the Salt Lake Bees defeat the Albuquerque Isotopes. We got really good seats.

The Apple won the healthy foods race--defeating the carrot, the eggplant, the corn, and the banana.

One more big day of tourism tomorrow, then back home to the grind.
