Day 4
Wednesday, 31 May 2017
Bickleigh, Devonshire to Glastonbury, Somerset
61.3 miles, 6h09m, 10.0 mph
Elapsed Time: 8h51m, Max speed: 26.6mph
Total Climbing: 1739ft, Max elevation: 445ft
Total mileage: 240.1
We got a late start from the castle due to breakfast not being
served until 8:30. We had the traditional English breakfast for
the fourth consecutive day.
We spent a lot of the day on canal towpaths. So much of the ride
was flat. Overall a much easier day.
It wasn't all canals. Here the hedges were made of rock.
Back on the canals for a nature sighting. The swans disapproved of
our cycling near them.
There were quite a few of these pillboxes along this particular
canal. Just in case the Germans invade, I guess.
Mr. Balint wore his special hedge-blend fabic jersey today.
Canals. Most of them had actual boats in them. And working locks.
We stopped in Taunton for lunch. You can see what we had.
It took us a while to navigate the streets of Bridgewater. Mr.
Balint took the opportunity to hose the crud from his drive train.
Eventually we could see Glastonbury Tor in the distance. By the
time we got to town, all the pubs' kitchens were
closed so we settled for the only open restaurant: Italian. We
never got to see the Abbey or the Grave of King Arthur because
those things
close to early and open too late. Fortunately, Tourism is fairly
far down our list of priorities, after 1) Survival, 2) Finishing
the ride, 3) Drinking beer,
and 4) Interneting.
