2002 Bicycle Tour of Colorado
378.3m

Lessons learned for riding in the Rockies:
  • Get out west at least a couple of days before the ride. JT had trouble acclimatizing this time and next time it could be me.
  • Drink plenty of fluids all the time.
  • Use sunscreen even if you normally don't. I had a good tan going in to this ride but nevertheless I started to burn at the higher elevations.
  • Use puncture-resistant tires like Specialized Armadillos or Continental Gatorskins. There is more debris along the roads than in the east, and it doesn't wash away as often. Leave the racing slicks at home unless you really enjoy changing tires.
  • Get started earlier in the morning than you want to. If you clear one mountain pass ahead of the rains it will be worth it. We crossed six major passes and it rained on three of them.
  • Always carry a jacket and sunscreen.
  • Watch out for the sprinklers if you are camping on grass.
